LAURA CASH OF CHE-VAL

In a surprise move last week that delighted its deeply loyal fan base, indie pop duo Che-Val released an cover version of the Beach Boys Brian Wilson pop music masterpiece "God Only Knows." The song which has been licensed for CD and digital streaming will be contained in the new Che-Val album "Waterproof" coming in April.

This "reimagined cover..is our tribute to all our friends and family, as well as musicians we have worked with past and present, because truly God only knows where we would be without them," said Kenny Cash, Che-Val member and producer. The artist published a full list of these people in his social media. "I usually don't like when people tag me on Facebook in connection with music I'm not a part of--but I tagged everyone on this list--because I wanted to give credit where credit is due," he said.

Unlike the original arrangement of "God Only Knows," which was part of the Beach Boys pop masterpiece "Pet Sounds," considered by many to be a recording masterpiece on par with the Beatles "Sgt Pepper" album, the Che-Val version uses a completely unique arrangement devoid of all acoustic instrumentation. In fact, the only instrument on the track is a Korg MicroKORG Synthesizer Vocoder, which Kenny Cash used to electronically filter the what is otherwise an entirely "a cappella" version of the song.

"Kenny and I love the original song-- one of these beautiful places where our diverse musical tastes really come together," Laura explained. "The melody, the lyric, the harmony, the arrangement and the deeply touching emotion--all so complex and gorgeous. We wanted to do this song for a long time--but we had to find a way of making it uniquely our own. I just hope our version does some justice to Brian Wilson, an artistic genius Kenny and I deeply adore."
